It was a great night for Democrats in this country, but this morning I'm feeling a bit glum. I wished my state of Nevada had joined in on the fun a bit more.
I don't have too much of a problem Jill Derby losing her bid for congress, though it would have been different if she had been that 15th pickup needed to take control. Republican Dean Heller is very moderate, and will be even more so being in the minority. Derby would have been better, but anything is better than who we have now.
But it seems when it comes to governor, we are going the wrong way. Gov-elect Jim Gibbons is no moderate, no pragmatist. He drank the right-wing Kool-aide a long time ago, and has no intention of changing drinks now.
It's sad because he is almost polar opposite of outgoing Republican Gov. Kenny Guinn, who's picture should be in the dictionary under the word Centrist. Guinn did just about everything to discourage a Gibbons' win short of throwing his support to the Democrats.
So while the rest of the country is moving to the center, I fear Nevada may be dragged to the right.
